Microfinance Partner Profile: Opportunity International Colombia
History
Opportunity International has been operating in Colombia since 1975 and is focused on reaching the most economically, socially and geographically marginalized clients, including those who have been displaced due to violence. Recognizing the need to offer more than just loans, Opportunity International plans to form a fully regulated commercial finance company in January 2010. With the legal status of a regulated commercial finance company, Opportunity will be able to offer savings, insurance and other client-centric products to microentrepreneurs throughout Colombia. Financial products such as savings and insurance allow low income populations to accumulate assets and lift themselves out of poverty. Opportunity Colombia plans to extend financial services nation-wide to more than 250,000 Colombian microentrepreneurs over the next 5 years.
