Microfinance Partner Profile: Opportunity International Mexico
History
In 2004, Opportunity International launched Oportunidad Microfinanzas, a microfinance institution committed to targeting the poor in Mexico. Mexico suffers from high unemployment and poverty, which inspired Opportunity International to bring financial services to grow local businesses.
Opportunity offers a vision of lending that is differentiated from other microfinance institutions in Mexico. It provides products tailored specifically for Mexico. These specialty products include “opportunity loans” for festival businesses and insurance for vulnerable Mexican farmers.
In 2009, Oportunidad Microfinanzas will continue to expand within the slums of urban Guadalajara and in rural communities in Jalisco and Michoacan, where joblessness and despair are painfully common.
