Jacqueline Syokwaa Trust Group
In many places across the globe, children can’t afford school fees or live too far away to attend school. Help more kids in Nairobi, Kenya go to school and to help build up the communities where they live.
About Jacqueline Syokwaa's Trust Group:
Jacqueline Syokwaa, one of the leaders of this 38 member trust group, is also the owner of a small primary school in her village slum, Kiambiu. The village is located slightly outside of Nairobi, but is highly populated and growing steadily. Jacqueline is taking a loan from Opportuntiy to cater for the increasing number of children looking to take classes in her school. Her determination is an inspiration to the entire Kiambiu village.
Her fellow group leader, Joab Odhiambo Ongondo, is a fish monger who works in the Kibera Slums. Joab normally gets his fish from Nyanza Province, which borders Lake Victoria. However, he has established a source of fresh fish in Tanzania, where he will get fish at half the price when transport is taken into account. Transport to and from Nyanza province has increased considerably and Joan will used his loan to get increased numbers of fish at decreased prices from Tanzania.
This Trust Group, run by Jacqueline and Joab and their fellow leaders, has thirty eight (38) members. Sixteen (16) of the members are men, and twenty-two (22) are ladies. Those members with active loans are thirty four (34) at the moment. The group was formed on the 8th of October, 2008, so most of them are now repaying their second loans. The members come from three different slums areas in Nairobi: Kibera Slums, Kiambiu Town Slums, and the City Carton Slums. Kibera Slums is the largest slum in all of Africa, and about one third of the members come from there. The City Carton Slums were named so due to the large amount of structures there that are made out of paper cartons. Your support of this group will help lift them out of a poverty stricken life in the slums, and propel them onward to a brighter future.
